3 Insert the installation disc from an older operating system, such as Windows Vista or Windows XP. The disc will walk you through the installation process, which will get rid of the Windows 7 OS at the same time.

4 Restore your files. With the external hard drive connected, click the "Start" icon, select "Control Panel" and then click on "System Maintenance." Click on "Select Another Backup to Restore Files From" and then select your external hard drive. This will walk you through the steps to restore your files from the external hard drive.
